Dealing with here and yonder, silence and shared utopias, the two exhibitions currently showing at Gaffa Gallery are like the sides of a canyon, the thematic strains reverberating between them. I Have Forgotten More Than You Know features four local artists (Tanya Baker, Craig Bender, Fiona Lowry and Pete Volich) working in a variety of media, meditating on silent habitats and the detritus of time and space. Ghostly photos are parked alongside delicately drawn dreamscapes. In Mountaineering Laura McLean attempts to access a utopia that used to dwell ‘over there’, a distance increasingly stifled by our hyperlinked existence (in which Mt. Everest can no doubt be climbed on You Tube). Moving through still images, sculpture and linoprints, McLean seeks the new shared vision of a perfect world.

Until Sept 8, Gaffa Gallery, 1/7 Randle St, Surry Hills, 9281 1103 or gaffa.com.au
