We know it is the holidays when Sydney’s Moonlight Cinema rolls around at the end of each year.

Now in its 29th season, it is firmly in the calendar for many as each year it reaches into an archive of the best holiday and blockbuster films, giving patrons not only a chance to catch up on a movie they may have missed at the cinema during the year, but also to revisit Xmas favourites such as Elf, Love Actually and the perennial classic Home Alone.

“We are focusing on our 29th year…and it’s an opportunity for people to have a beautiful evening in some of the country’s most beautiful parklands,” Timothy Morgan, Marketing and Communications Manager, Moonlight at EVT said.

“The original concept of Moonlight as started by a different organisation but the essence has remained the same.

Moonlight was started by two students in Melbourne in 1996 and they soon found themselves dealing with a concept that brought in many thousand patrons and millions of dollars each year as they expanded around the capital cities.

Around 15 years ago Event Cinemas acquitted Moonlight and has taken it to another level for programming and comfort for its patrons.

Each year the north-eastern corner of Centennial Park is Sydney’s designated space for the event.

“Centennial Park is a great location and only a short walk from Bondi Junction station, and there is also onsite parking available and plenty of transport options,” Morgan said.

While the concept of patrons watching a film on a bean bag in the open air has not fundamentally changed over the years, the way in which the films are presented has.

“We screen digitally and all the films onsite are screened in the same way that they would experience in the cinema,” Morgan said.

“We also work closely with a production team to ensure that we have the best quality sound available for an outdoor experience.”

Moonlight Cinema is one of the few open air events to welcome you and your pooch, as long as pooch is on a short leash.

“We definitely encourage people if they have a dog, and we ask that people respect others and the park,” Morgan said.

“The venues can be quite warn on a summer night and we also recommend people bring a drinking container for the dog.”

Like all outdoor events, the vaguery of the weather can mean that the event can be canceled at short notice.

“We are always monitoring the weather, and if there is rain on a particular night was send a notification to all guests that the session has been cancelled,”Morgan said.

“We offer our guests the opportunity to swap to another session during the season, which they can do right up until the end of the season.”

Going to the Moonlight Cinema’s website there is not only the program until the end of this year, but also many options for food, drink and a luxury experience in seating.

“It has become a tradition each summer and we have a lot of opportunities for people to customise their experience with our onsite bars and we also offer the opportunity for people to BYO,” Morgan said.
