MONSTERS, INC. 3D

Films that are amusing to children and films that are amusing to adults don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Monsters, Inc. 3D is one of those rare gems that delights both the young and the old. Packed with slapstick humour as well as allusions to the energy crisis (Monstropolis faces a scream shortage); ten years on, the film has dated incredibly well and remains relevant and clever. Once again, top scarer Sulley has his world turned upside down by a cute little contaminant, child ‘Boo’ who runs rampage on his world and heartstrings.

On top of that, the original has received a dimensional update – it is now in 3D. This is arguably unnecessary as the concept was already incredibly unique and stands well on its own. The glasses didn’t give any more depth (pun intended) to the film, but acted as a minor novelty instead. (SY) *** ½
