‘Marvelous The Show’ Is a Hilarious R-Rated Marvel Parody

Calling all adult fans of superhero movies! Marvelous The Show is returning to Sydney but only for a limited season!
Co-creator and director Samwise Holmes spent five years working on this show which is spectacular, raunchy and side splittingly hilarious. He’s excited for audiences to come along and experience his show which brings Thor, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Iron Man and many others to the stage.
“Marvelous’s core aim is to create hilarious, stylistic and altogether unexpected twists on the most iconic scenes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” he enthused. “It’s a creative extravaganza featuring almost every style of performance you can imagine – from aerial acts, to live vocals, acrobatics, magic, comedy, stunts and a huge variety of different dance styles!”
But there are also references to other movies including The Greatest Showman, Flashdance, Wicked, Dirty Dancing and Magic Mike that should add to the enjoyment.
“The musical elements are a lot of fun of course – we have a cast of absurdly talented performers who can sing as well as all the other craziness, and our two featured vocalists are two of the most talented vocalists you’ve ever heard!”
Holmes explained that he didn’t initially set out to create a show. He had a gag about Captain America and then the ideas just rolled in.
“What started as “this would be funny to do a live performance of” quickly turned into a show when I started having ideas for other scenes. The ideas became more and more ridiculous, bigger and more ambitious, and we knew that moving forward would be a go-big-or-go-home moment for us! Thankfully we went for the go big!”
Holmes is certain that he has pushed boundaries in this production, emphasising that it’s not a musical, a burlesque show, nor a circus show.
“We’re putting performances onstage that will be nothing like anything people have seen before. From our acrobatic & aerial boyband with the multiverse of Spider-Men, to our ballet-stunt-strip-fight scene featuring Black Widow, this show takes many different styles and creates unique and exciting mashups!”
What makes this show more enjoyable is that there is audience interaction notably with the Deadpool narrator. Fans of the superhero flicks will be mesmerized but those who haven’t even seen one of these movies should still find this entertaining.
“The incredible mashup of performance styles and physical feats are encapsulating regardless of whether you understand the in-jokes and additional references. We focused on writing a great show first, that also happens to be a Marvel parody.”
Holmes said that judging by the promising comments from audiences who have seen this show there’s yet to be one person who was disappointed in having purchased a ticket to Marvelous.
“The comments I enjoy hearing is that the show was completely not what they expected! We love that audiences are surprised by how big and wild we go, but we also need people to know how spectacular the show is going to be in advance as well, so that they actually come and see it!!”
And finally, as the creator of Marvelous The Show, what advice does Holmes have for people who are planning on coming along to catch a performance?
“My recommendation is that you go and watch any other show. Play it safe! Maybe watch a show similar to everything else you’ve ever watched, otherwise you might accidentally walk away with your mind blown. And honestly, we just can’t afford to keep cleaning up the pavement out front from all the blown minds!!”
‘Marvelous The Show’ is running from Mar 14 – 22 at the Riverside Theatre, cnr Market & Church St, Paramatta.
