GIG REVIEW – MAMA KIN: 14 March at The Basement, Circular Quay

Radiating confidence, Mama Kin charmed audiences on Thursday 14 March at The Basement in Circular Quay with her unique amalgam of soul, country and indie music.

After an entertaining encounter with support act and musical wonder Tom Spender, Mama Kin stepped up to the stage and stated just how thrilled she and her band were to finally be playing at The Basement – and that everyone need not worry as her extreme v-neck jumpsuit was well secured with plenty of gaffa tape.

Mama Kin’s authenticity shone through the rest of the performance too as she played songs from her new album, The Magician’s Daughter, some slightly older tunes and a playful, whistling number with “Tommy” Spender. The cheeky, upbeat To My Table got quite a few audience members grooving in their seats and Tore My Heart Out, Mama Kin’s duet with her big brother Michael on keys, was performed with extraordinary emotion and brilliance.

Weaving both tender tales and hilarious anecdotes between powerful and often moving songs, Mama Kin shared a piece of herself with the audience that night, through music which she clearly lives and breathes. (KD)
