LOVE IS STRANGE

LOVE IS STRANGE

Love Is Strange is the tender and moving story of an elderly gay couple who takes advantage of new laws and marry in New York.

Wedded bliss is short-lived, as George (Alfred Molina) is instantly dismissed from his Catholic school teaching position and the affordability of living in an apartment with his partner Ben (John Lithgow) diminishes.

They must live apart with family until their circumstances improve. The complexities of living apart and difficult adjustments to the lifestyles of family members are explored. Tensions that arise ultimately test the strength of the family unit.

The casting of the leads is dubious as their attraction is difficult to comprehend, but performances are rich and effective. This is an intelligent and topical film which appropriately touches on the hypocrisies of the Catholic Church. (MM)
