Lloyd Langford On His New Stand-up Comedy ‘Powerful Energy’

Australia’s favourite Welsh comedian Lloyd Langford returns to Sydney in a brand new hilarious stand-up comedy called Powerful Energy, which is guaranteed to provide a therapeutic overdose of laughter!

Langford sat down to talk to City Hub recently about his passion for comedy which was evident from a young age.

“I was already interested in the mechanics of comedy and performing in my local youth theatre. I feel like I had a little more leeway in school to mess around, as my grades were good.”

But he came to the realisation that comedy was what he wanted to do professionally in the first few weeks while at university, after watching a stand-up comedy show.

“I had help from a very generous comedian called Rhod Gilbert who let me live rent-free in his flat in London to pursue my dream. You basically just keep writing and honing and performing your jokes until you’re good enough to get paid for it. Some people might argue I’m not there quite yet!” He laughed.

Langford has been a notable figure in the world of comedy on Australian television appearing on Have You Been Paying Attention, Thank God You’re Here and being the victor on Taskmaster Season 2. He loves performing comedy on television and on stage.

“Live performance in front of an audience can’t really be beaten but television appearances help build that audience,” he explained.

When asked whether he bases his stand-up comedy shows on his life experiences he laughingly responded, “Yes. If I based my stand up on Celia Paquola’s life experiences, it would be a bit odd!”

Langford who resides in Melbourne, has performed comedy extensively throughout England and Australia, and said that audiences who attend his shows in both countries are easy going and are able to laugh at themselves – but there was one guy who took offense at the silliest of things.

“I used to have a routine making fun of the Welsh flag (and patriotism in general) and some bloke in the audience absolutely lost his mind and started shouting and threatening me. It was only when he cut my microphone that I realised that he was the sound technician for the venue!”

Asked to talk about his brand-new stand-up comedy show Powerful Energy Langford was quick to respond.

“It’s about the last year of my life. From the excitement of doing Taskmaster, my first movie role and an AACTA nomination to day-to-day stuff like buying a new car and a very unfortunate incident in a farmer’s market.” There’s plenty of material that should evoke infectious laughter from beginning until the end.

His response was hilarious and straight to the point when asked what audience Powerful Energy should appeal to.

“It’s for people that don’t mind a bit of effing and jeffing!”

In conclusion, should people who are thinking of attending this show just jump out of their comfort zone, be brave and come along?

“It’s up to them if they want to come. I’ve performed gigs to zero people before due to a contractual obligation. I’m sure it’ll be fine!” laughed Langford.
