Letter to the editor: liquor licenses

I would like to correct some claims in a letter last week about pubs and clubs.

Sydney late at night should be safe and have a variety of entertainment options for everyone.

The State Government, NOT the City of Sydney, issues liquor licenses. It is the State Government who controls the volume of licenses issued, where they are issued for and the hours they can trade.

I have called upon the Government and the Opposition to introduce renewable liquor licences like they have in Paris, New York, Edinburgh and even Brisbane.

I urge Sydneysiders concerned about getting more responsible liquor licensing and improved safety to join me in calling for:

– Changes to state licensing legislation;

– Density controls – to allow Council to refuse applications for new venues when an area is saturated; and

– Funding more Police on the street in Kings Cross on Friday and Saturday nights.
