LATE NIGHT TALES – MGMT

LATE NIGHT TALES – MGMT

While it seems cheeky to attach an artists name to a compilation album in order to ship a few units I must say it’s an excellent way to get an insight into where musicians get their inspiration from. Late Night Tales is a compilation series that invites popular artists to compile an album’s worth of tracks that would form their “late night” track selection. Previous compilations have been provided by Jamiroquai, Arctic Monkeys and now, after deservedly selling about a zillion copies of their debut album Oracular Spectacular and riding high on all sorts of music industry adulation MGMT have provided us with the latest. The selection begins with 80s experimental rock group Disco Inferno’s Can’t See It Through and the song intro immediately hints at where MGMT get their pretty indie pop sentiment. The Durutti Column instrumental For Belgium Friends demonstrates a sonic inspiration for MGMT’s sound and the group also throws in an exclusive cover of English goth rock group Bauhaus’ All We Ever Wanted Was Everything to satiate any fan’s thirst for any actual output from the group. It might not be as good as a new album of original tracks from MGMT but this compilation is a great soundtrack to wondering what they’re up to next.
