LATE BLOOMERS

LATE BLOOMERS

In this comedy drama, Isabella Rossellini and William Hurt deliver an endearing performance as an aging couple growing apart.

Julie Gavras’ third film brings us Adam (Hurt), an internationally acclaimed architect, who wins a lifetime achievement award and fears this may be the end of his career. To prove himself wrong, he gathers a group of young architects to work nights on a secret project. Meanwhile, his wife, Mary, after a minor memory lapse decides she has to embrace her ageing body, and begins to change her life around this idea. The couple grow apart, and their now grown children take it into their hands to bring them back together.

This light-hearted comedy drama has all the elements of a classic rom-com without succumbing to predictable outcomes. And while the film sometimes falls into trivial dialogue, Rossellini’s charisma often makes up for this. (HP) ***
