Director Mark Kilmurry says he was “thrilled” when Clayton Jacobson gave his permission for Kenny to be adapted for the stage, and “delighted” that Steve Rodgers would be doing the adapting.
Kenny, Kilmurry says, “is the fearless Aussie plumber who looks for the best in every situation.”
Remembering the film from years ago, Steve Rodgers says “Kenny is an antidote to that win at all costs mentality, claiming decency and dignity as true measures of what it means to live a good life.”
I asked Kilmurry what changes Steve Rodgers made for the stage and why.
“The way into the adaptation,” he says, “was to do a TED talk so that Kenny could talk directly to the audience about his life.”
Did the small Ensemble stage pose any difficulties for directing Kenny?
“The idea of the TED talk frees the space up and we’ve converted the whole thing to make it look like corporate environment.”
Why has Kenny proven to be such a success with Australian audiences?
“Kenny’s willing to help, he’s enthusiastic and optimistic, he sees the best in people and maintains a curiosity about life, including finding a new toilet, and that keeps him buoyant and alive.”
