While developers and council squabble, a group of enterprising local artists convince owners that they should move in. Exit rats, broken glass, squatters and voilà – a vibrant arts community appears! The once derelict Allied Mills Silos in Summer Hill plays host to an eclectic group of designers, video and sound artists, sculptors, painters and filmmakers – a creative hive of activity – hence this exhibition in the nearby Delmar Gallery.

Curator Catherine Benz says, “the scale of the silos and looming industrial relics have certainly had some bearing on the work with one of the themes being the re-animation of industrial ruins.”

Inside the Silos is strongly conceptual, pushing the boundaries between art and technology. From post-apocalyptic landscapes inhabited by bizarre looking chooks to welded metal sculptures. Notable contemporary artists abound including sculptor Louis Pratt and Todd McMillan, soon to exhibit at MONA, Hobart. For those who are quick take a once only tour of the Silo studios. (GW)
