I LOVE YOU, MAN

I LOVE YOU, MAN

Frequently touching, sporadically lewd and very amusing, I Love You, Man is a fresh addition to the staid romantic comedy genre.  The film starts with a proposal and ends with a male-female wedding, but everything in between is pure bromance – if you’ll excuse the buzzword.  The male chemistry comes courtesy of Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) and Sydney Fife (Jason Segel), who begin a relationship of convenience after the charming but friendless Peter realises he needs a best man for his wedding.  Shambolic, cavalier Sydney sweeps Peter off his feet (platonically speaking, of course) and the two men are soon trading guitar solos and intimacies in the macho surrounds of Sydney’s custom-built “man cave”.  Amidst a cacophony of vomit gags and slapstick manoeuvres, the film also provides a thoughtful and serious riff on male friendship.  (Andrew Small)
