Maybe it’s the most romantic day of the year for you, or perhaps you’re groaning at the thought of a thousand posts flooding your feeds on February 14th. Either way, Sydney’s got you covered for Valentine’s Day whether you’re planning to dine with a partner, party the night away or cynically decry the day as it comes.
Do something different for Valentine’s Day
There’s nothing wrong with a Valentine’s Day dinner, but why not look for something a little different to pair with this classic hallmark of the day?
For instance, if you head to Sydney Town Hall you can see The Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform a number of classic romantic songs to get in the mood for love. With a mix of orchestral arrangements like Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and music from movies like Princess Leia’s Theme, it’s a splendid way to set the mood for the evening. Tickets are moving fast, so get in soon.
To spice up your Valentine’s experience and dinner, take to the skies of Sydney at the Tower Eye for a private skywalk with your partner for Valentine’s Day, which you can pair with a three-course dining experience at Sea Life Sydney amongst the aquarium’s inhabitants after hours.
Additionally, the Capitol Theatre is hosting BIG Live’s ballet production of Romeo and Juliet, featuring remarkable international talent and set to the scores of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev. Only showing on the 14th and 15th February, this is a great production to check out no matter who your date is.
See a classic romance flick on the big screen
Romance movies are a hallmark of the Valentine’s season, and some of the best cinemas in Sydney are showing a variety of classic romance films that make for excellent viewing as part of your night out.
In terms of new releases, you can catch Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy for a new entry in this long-running romcom series. If horror’s more your speed, Heart Eyes is here to raise your adrenaline with a film about a serial killer who attacks couples on, you guessed it, Valentine’s Day. I’m positive these two films would make for an interesting date night double feature…
Sydney’s independent theatres are also bringing the classics back to the screen for Valentine’s Day. In Cremorne, the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace is showing Breakfast at Tiffany’s on the big screen, while The Ritz in Randwick has a variety of films playing that night. For the romantics, there’s Pretty Woman, The Princess Bride on 35mm and 10 Things I Hate About You. But they haven’t forgotten about the cynics either, thanks to a showing of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
At Golden Age Cinema and Bar, you can revisit Damien Chazelle’s famously not-Best Picture winning musical La La Land, which is safe to call as a modern classic at this stage. For a slightly less… uh, conventional romance film later in the evening, book tickets for David Cronenberg’s Crash, a movie about people who can only find pleasure in the traumatic injuries associated with a car crash. Tickets are selling fast for both, so be quick.
Valentine’s Day Singles Parties
Of course, not everyone’s got a partner on this day for romantics, and heading to a single’s party can be a way to still have fun on the 14th. Plus, there’s too many speed dating sessions to count in the lead up to the 14th; chances are you’ll be able to find one near you if you look for it.
CitySwoon are running a number of parties on February 13th for different age groups, with demographics being 24-34, 32-42, 39-49 and 49-59. Who knows, perhaps you could find a late Valentine’s Date at one of these events!
In a similar vein, Fortress Sydney is running Love Without Limits, a party that celebrates love in all of its forms. With the use of coloured stickers, you can signal that you’re taken, open to whatever happens, or even express your anti-Valentine’s sentiment, if you please. With vibrant cocktails, music all night and free drinks for the first 50 people to show up, it’s shaping up to be a great way to spend the night.
We hope that, no matter what you get up to or who you spend it with, you have a great day on the 14th of February!
