HOODOO GURUS – GOLD WATCH: 20 GOLDEN GREATS

The technology available to archaeologists to carbon date artifacts never ceases to amaze me, and similarly it is possible to date an Aussie music fan using the DFFL method – that is the Dave Faulkner Follicle Length method – a simple single question “Did you ever see Dave Faulkner with long hair?” separates the Aussie music fans into his or her appropriate musical generation – Post or Pre Faulkner’s Shearing. The beauty of this “Best Of” compilation comes with the selection of tracks, and the plentiful number of Pre-Shearing tracks. With nine albums over a twenty year career, the beloved Gurus never felt the need to churn them out and here they have not felt the need to shy away from the fact that their first two albums were and are bona fide classics. Seven of the twenty songs here come from Stone Age Romeos and Mars Needs Guitars, even though they bow to convention by opening the album with the new single, Used By Date, think most fans Pre or Post will agree that it will earn its right to sit on the album in the coming years. You should own most of these, if you don’t then this is the place to start.
