We are getting ever closer to that time of year again. It is the time when Sydneysiders flock to the city and surrounding areas to witness the spectacle that is the city’s iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks.

Previous years have seen much excitement and catastrophe surrounding this day, as many would head to the vantage points in the early hours of the morning to obtain the best views, followed by a challenging journey home for many.

It can be argued that the recent opening of the metro extension will make it easier for more people to make it to the city for the fireworks, especially those living in Sydney’s Northwest whose commute to and from the city now takes them less than 45 minutes.

Join The Ballot

The NSW government is taking the NYE experience one step further this year as they once again announced the closure of the Cahill expressway, providing one of, if not the best fireworks viewing point in Sydney.

This year the ballot is being extended for 1,000 extra tickets to give away. The viewing point will be split up into two sessions, as 3,500 tickets will be sold to view the 9pm fireworks and another 3,500 tickets will be sold for the headlining midnight fireworks.

The secretary of Transport for NSW, Josh Murray has remained firm on the initiative, as it is a part of what makes Sydney’s fireworks up there as the best in the world, ““People come from around the globe to witness the spectacle that is Sydney Harbour on New Year’s Eve, and for a quarter of a century we’ve been transforming one of the city’s hardest working roadways into one of our best viewing platforms,” Mr. Murray said

“A lot may have changed in the world, and on our roads, since the turn of the millennium, but the view of the fireworks from the Cahill Expressway remains unrivalled.”

The ballot for tickets for the family-friendly event NYE on the Cahill Expressway 2024 is open until 11.59pm on Friday October 4, 2024. Enter the ballot, here.

Celebrate NYE In Sydney

This year, Sydney City Council has taken its own steps in creating greater anticipation for the evening, through the creation of a new interactive website.

This website is designed for those planning on travelling to the city the sufficient advice in planning every facet of the night, including transport, events, and firework vantage points. Some of the interactive features to assist with this process include a live transport timetable, an interactive vantage point map, and even a countdown for the big night.

The City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone is hopeful that the website will make the visitor experience as streamlined as possible, “Celebrating one of the biggest New Year’s Eve spectacles in the world takes planning, so it’s important to us to ensure we enhance that visitor experience from the outset”, she said. “Pivotal to the visitor experience is making it as easy as possible to find out all the information they need to plan for the big night”.
