Riverside National Theatre of Parramatta presents the theatrical adaptation of Girls in Boys’ Cars, from the book by multi-award-winning Australian writer, Felicity Castagna. Her feisty characters are brought to life to explore their adolescent experience on stage.

The story follows two sharp, funny, and adventurous young women, Asheeka and Rosa. Refusing to be held back any longer, the friends find themselves on an accidental road trip that leads to a whole lot of trouble.

In Thelma and Louise-style, a journey through NSW in stolen cars leads to Asheeka going missing and Rosa in juvenile jail. The road trip shapes the complex lives of the girls and uncovers themes of cultural expectations and societal pressures.

Felicity Castagna has published four novels for adults and young adults, with her most recent release being Girls in Boys’ Cars. The book won the Victorian and Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards 2022, and the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Honour Book Of The Year 2022.

Castagna herself has described the upcoming adaptation as a “daring production about daring girls”, that will appeal to everyone who has wanted to escape familiarity and explore the world. Award-winning theatre-maker, Priscilla Jackson, adapted the book and is directing the show. Having directed the National Theatre of Parramatta and Sydney Theatre Company’s White Pearl, Jackson is experienced with Australian classics that celebrate strong and relatable female stories.

Girls in Boys’ Cars will be presented at Riverside Theatres from Thursday 19 October to Friday 3 November. Tickets are available to purchase on the Riverside Theatre website or from the theatre Box Office.
