Free Chippendale studio space up for grabs

Visual artists have until tomorrow to apply for a free three-month residency at the old CUB site in Chippendale.

All three floors in the Kensington Street building are being used as a temporary studio where “collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange is encouraged”.

Sam Chester of Queen Street Studio was approached by Frasers to oversee the project. She says this will be the first of two residencies spread over two three-month periods.

“We’ve had heaps of interest,” Ms Chester says.

She believes three months should give the artists plenty of time to produce some exciting works.

“It would be great to offer them more time,” she says, “but it’s about access and it is such a rare opportunity to have access to a free space like this.”

Ms Chester and her partner James Winter from Queen Street Studio are handling the selection process, along with officials from Frasers and The City of Sydney. Chester says the process will be fair and transparent.

“I’m, sure there’ll be a great deal of argy-bargy,” she says.
