Clover Moore claimed victory in the race for Sydney Lord Mayor—a historic sixth term—despite suffering a swing against her.

“Thank you, Sydney! I am grateful for your support and excited about continuing the work to ensure our city is the best place to live, work, and visit,” Moore posted on social media.

Independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich congratulated Moore on her unprecedented win. “We won! Sydney voters have returned Lord Mayor Clover Moore for four more years of progressive, community-led, and independent city government,” Greenwich posted on Facebook.

Longest-Serving Sydney Mayor

Moore, the first woman elected Lord Mayor in the City of Sydney’s history when she was elected to the top job for the first time in 2004, is already its longest-serving Mayor.

Moore, who suffered a five percent swing against her, said she had endured a “nasty” campaign. “This campaign hasn’t been easy,” Moore posted on Facebook before the elections. “Nasty, personal attacks. Relentless tabloid press. Candidates constantly talking down the City. Major parties directing preferences to kick community independents out of Town Hall.”

“I’ve always said the worst part about this job is the politics, but it’s worth it. I’m so proud of our track record of achievement and excited about the work ahead,” said Moore.

Moore faced criticism from some quarters over the state of the city’s nightlife, the future of its gay neighborhood Oxford Street, and the council’s decision to install bike lanes.”City building takes time, careful planning, and tenacity. I find that work energizing, and I’m ready to take our work to the next level,” Moore added.

Election Results to Be Announced in October

The NSW Electoral Commission stated that the official results of the local government elections will be announced between October 1 and 3.

“The count cannot be concluded until all postal votes have been returned to the Electoral Commissioner. The deadline for the return of completed postal votes is 6 PM on Friday, September 27, 2024,” the Commission said.

“When all the votes have been counted, the official announcement of the election results will be declared in writing. Results will be declared between October 1 and 3, 2024.”
