FILM SERIES: THE VIEW FROM ELSEWHERE

FILM SERIES: THE VIEW FROM ELSEWHERE

Since April 2008, the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation has been showing works by artists from Asia, the Pacific and Australia through exhibitions and projects not easily accommodated in the usual private galleries and contemporary art spaces. As a not-for-profit organisation, they focus on supporting the creation of new works of art, publishing and distributing texts to support the works, and developing educational programs.

Their first exhibition for 2009 – in partnership with Queensland Art Gallery – is The view from elsewhere, an expansive collection of film, video and installation works reflecting contemporary moving image practice from East Asia to the Middle East.

For the next three months they will be screening full-length feature films, documentaries and short films, exploring politics, love, life and the sheer power of the moving image.

There are over 100 free screenings, with highlights including Squatterpunk, a wild, pulsating film looking at young punks within the slums of Manila, and The Woman Who is Beating the Earth by Tsuki Inoue from Japan. Complementing the film screenings is Small Acts, an installation of video works by 19 artists, including Yoko Ono and Nam June Paik.
