Effie – The Virgin Bride

Effie – The Virgin Bride

The lady with the big “hairs” is back, and she’s larger than life this time.

Mary Coustas, aka Effie, grew up in a loud, rambunctious Greek family, and as a child, she was always imitating her relatives- even though “my mum hated it,” she laughs.

The generation before her own were the first ones to come to Australia, and she loved the way they could tell stories about their struggles with humour.

“Life is funny. It’s also difficult, challenging, heartbreaking, and boring at times. But if you can have as much comedy around all of those things, I think it makes for surviving it,” she says.

Coustas describes her relationship with her audiences as a special exchange.

“I think anyone who feels marginalised by difficulty, or judged by the world finds comfort in what I do. We’re trying to laugh and identify all the difficulties of life through comedy. We liberate each other,” she says warmly.

Coustas is at her best performing live. Even Acropolis Now was filmed in front of a live audience. That means that unlike other sitcoms, the laughs were all real, and there was no time for divas or countless takes.

The Virgin Bride sees Coustas playing three characters, or as she puts it “definitely three but possibly four.”

To top it all off, she says that this show will be “the best thing I’ve ever done.” So if her track record is anything to go by – this is one you don’t want to miss.
