DOUBT

DOUBT

Sister James (Amy Adams) fears that the likeable, revolutionary Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) has made improper advances on a student. She reveals her thoughts to the joyless disciplinarian, Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep), who despite having no evidence of his guilt except her certainty, vows to remove him from the school.

The conflict that ensues is emotionally riveting and thought-provoking. Is Aloysius destroying him to stop the church changing’ Is Flynn hiding something’ Then this leads to questions about the nature of Catholicism and those claiming to practice it.
The only thing that deflates Doubt is its ending. The bitter fight between nun and priest finishes abruptly and without answering some of its questions, making it seem like a boxing match that never sees the knockout. (Michelle Porter)
