DISTANT BRIDGES

DISTANT BRIDGES

According to Mambo artist Reg Mombassa, the ‘Australian Jesus’ rides a pony, wears a cape, and welcomes refugees. Bizarreness aside, the central message of this exhibition in support of Amnesty International is that propounded by Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Where does the journey of the refugee begin? And where does it end? What are the bridges we build between the two? Artists including Adam Cullen, David Fairbairn, Fiona White and Garry Shead all grapple with this issue through a variety of visual narratives. (AB)
