DAZE OF BEING WILD

‘A laughing decoy that obscures complex questions about preciousness and relevance.  They tell jokes before they mug you.’ The catalogue description of TV Moore’s new exhibition couldn’t be more apt.  It’s not immediately clear whether the work is painting or photography.  The abstract images are trapped behind perspex in handpainted frames: portrait and landscape, medium and large – there is no small.

Housed in a small carpeted section of the gallery the works are exuberant and overbearing, they have an almost Baroque presence.  Reds, pinks, purples and yellows, the impactful colours ooze and swallow any remaining sense of cosiness from when first entering the room.

Knocking Shop reveals what looks like a human head and torso.  A distant planet or an esoteric eye appears within the frame.  A blue glow emanates from the figure.  A mystical being radiating divinity, or some just guy playing laser-tag.  The Swimmer is an orgy of purple and red.  The curved strokes and tangled lines enthral and entrap.

TV is for Timothy Vernon.  The Sydney-based artist’s work has been displayed nationally and internationally, including a large-scale permanent installation on Cockatoo Island.  This is Moore’s sixth solo exhibition at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, and he does not disappoint.
