CONCERT SERIES: SUBURBAN AUSTRALIA

CONCERT SERIES: SUBURBAN AUSTRALIA

Australian composer Mary Finsterer has long been known to music afficionados as imaginative, innovative and energetic. Finsterer’s music focuses on the tension between the hyperactive and the static, and is uncompromising in its intensity. Currently composer in residence at Campbelltown Arts Centre, Finsterer’s latest works will form part of a concert series to be performed at the centre, which draws on the eclectic mix of cross-cultural influences in contemporary Australian music.

The first concert of this three part series, titled Suburban Australia, centres on the sounds, experiences and issues encountered in contemporary Australian suburban life. This concert will debut Finsterer’s Chamber Work No. 1, as well as featuring pieces by Andrian Pertout, Nigel Westlake, Richard Vella and Elena Kats-Chernin.

Artistic director for the series, classical saxophonist Christina Leonard will play alongside exceptional music ensembles and collaborating guest artists throughout the three concerts. For Suburban Australia, Leonard will perform with the Sydney Soloists – a group comprised of some of the finest musicians in the country.

The other two concerts of the series, Rivers and Conversations, will be performed later this year. For advocates of contemporary Australian music or those curious to explore it, this series is a rare and unique insight, providing further proof that Campbelltown Arts Centre has got it going on.
