COMEDY: IT’S RHYS DARBY NIGHT

If you love the character someone plays on TV, it’s hard to think of that person as being someone else entirely. When that character is as ridiculous as Murray from Flight of the Conchords, this becomes especially tricky.  Luckily though, when it comes to Rhys Darby, there’s just enough of the absurd about him to make the transition from character, to real human being, a smooth one. Following a sell out Australian tour last year, Darby has returned to our shores with a brand new show – It’s Rhys Darby Night. So what sets this tour apart? According to Darby, it’s bigger and better.

“More shows, more characters, more stories, and venues.” And, most importantly, “New t-shirts.”

Darby’s unique brand of humour has been performed far and wide – from Iceland, to Edinburgh, Montreal to the Falkland Islands – but he finds Australian audiences particularly receptive. Speaking after his first show in Hobart, Darby’s excited by the screaming girls who’d welcomed him onstage – which probably had little to do with his new fitted jeans and haircut, and more with what Jim Carrey has described as,“Absolute brilliance … that Peter Sellers madness inside him.”

“I’m probably the most looking forward to the Sydney shows, because I’ve got more of a connection to Sydney than any other Australian city,” Darby explained. It seems the feeling is mutual, with a second Sydney show announced for October 28th, at the Enmore Theatre. Darby’s live performances have been described as a sensational blend of sound effects, characterisations and askew observations. Add to that some screaming Aussie chicks, and a couple of t-shirts, and it’s sure to be a hilariously bewildering night.
