COMEDY: HA HA HARBOUR CLUB

COMEDY: HA HA HARBOUR CLUB

REVIEW BY JASMINE MCLENNAN

Luna Park, the house of fun with the entrance of a laughing mouth, is now the fitting home to a new comedy club. The Ha Ha Harbour Club, which is held every Thursday night at the Sonar bar and restaurant, has all the makings of a great comedy venue.

The room is downstairs and dimly lit without windows. The stage is broad with enough space to dance, walk in a circle, or in the case of the official launch, juggle a chainsaw. Upstairs is the harbour, with the best view in Sydney. This is definitely a classy night out.

Comic manager Gillian Levett is the co-brainchild of the club along with Darren Sanders (The Laugh Garage Comedy Club in Parramatta).

The launch took place on 29 May. There were four acts in total, including Gary Bradshaw who moved to Australia from England and was devastated when he never found Skippy, Jason ‘Rash’ Ryder who pretended to be the ‘underwear thief’, Marty Coffey who can eat an apple while juggling it along with a bowling ball and an egg and Darren Sanders who soon found out that blow job jokes are not so funny on the ‘North Shore’.

Next up Barry McLeod and Arthur Writeus will be supporting Gary Eck who, as well as his extensive live comedy experience, as co-written and co-starred in the feature film You Can’t Stop the Murders and starred in the film Boytown. He also won Tropfest in 2004 for his film The Money, and is currently working on a screenplay with director George Miller for release in 2010.

Future line-ups include Eddie Ifft (Thank God You’re Here, Rove) with Darren Sanders and Tony Bailey on 19 June and Tommy Dean (ABC 702’s TGIF) with Simon Kennedy on 26 June. There is a new car park, and buses, trains and ferry’s run to Milsons Point which makes the club easy to get to by public transport.

The Ha Ha Harbour Club is the next big thing to hit the comedy scene in Sydney, and it’s going to make Luna Park a hot spot for adults as well as kids.
