Imagine having the chance to see Meryl Streep on stage. It’s the sort of once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you grab with both hands, and then some. Seeing an actress on stage, whose talent and beauty have withstood the test of time and continued to move audiences to laughter and tears, is pretty incredible. Seeing Shabana Azmi (known as India’s very own Meryl Streep) is bound to be the sort of experience you’re unlikely to forget in a hurry. In Australia to perform for the first time, in a limited theatre season, Azmi stars in Broken Promises – a psychological thriller that rips the mask off celebrity.

Azmi says the play tells “the story of a faux novelist, who has suddenly gained overnight limelight and has become a celebrity writer.” As a woman who has spent her life writing unsuccessful short stories in Hindi, Manjula Sharma is haunted by her unexpected global success, questioning whether she’s betraying her own language and identity in her rise to the top.
