The unique film festival that started in Australia and is now a hot international contest, the Smart Fone Flick Fest (SF3), has extended its deadline for entries until September 1. If you think that’s not long enough to make a film, take note: the 2018 film, Rearview, that swept all the major awards was made in just 48 hours.

SF3 is now in its eighth year and has gained in size, scope and popularity. And it’s little wonder – the prizes this year are phenomenal and anyone with a smartphone or tablet and some imagination can enter a film (as long as you follow the entry requirements, of course).

The more than $50,000 worth of prizes up for grabs include mentorships, new phones and iPads,

apps, microphones, stabilisers, professional memberships and more, with awards for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Actor as well as First Nations, Best Female Creative and Community awards.

There’s a variety of categories covering different genres, demographics, and styles. SF3 Kids invites budding film makers under the age of 16 to submit films of 10 minutes or less in length. Loads of Australian schools have entered this category this year so there’s going to be a lot of cheering from the sidelines.

Among the many other categories are: adults short films, feature films, 360 degree/AR/VR films. Festival co-director, Angela Blake describes the entries so far as “mind-boggling and very, very exciting”.

The judging panel includes industry professionals from around the country and, for the first time, a judge from the continent of Africa (following a flood of entries from Africa this year).

The SF3 films will be shown on a big screen and online in November, 2022.
