The long awaited opening of the expansion to the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW) is coming this weekend. A nine-day celebration of the new modern art wing of Sydney’s largest art museum will kick off this Saturday December 3.
Sydney, it seems, is excited to check out the new cultural experience, with over 15,000 registering to attend the opening.
“I am incredibly proud to now be welcoming visitors to our expansion, which has such a strong sense of place and such an innovative display of art,” said AGNSW Director Michael Brand.
“This is especially significant given the challenges we faced during the past three years of construction with the impact of bushfires, the global pandemic and record-breaking rainfall.”

A brand new stand alone building, along with another new building which will be connected with a public garden overlooking the harbour, have been constructed.
Designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA, the new building has been awarded a 6 green star rating- the first of its kind in Australia.
The building features elements of elegant design ready to incorporate any exhibitions in the space, including limestone art columns and a 3400 square metre roof garden ‘art-terraces’ and courtyards.
“Working closely with the Art Gallery of New South Wales team, we aimed to design an art museum building that is harmonious with its surroundings, one that breathes with the city, the park and the harbour” said Sejima and Nishizawa.
