One of Australia’s most anticipated exhibitions of 2021 is coming to the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery!

Archie 100: A Century of the Archibald Prize is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Archibald Prize, Australia’s oldest and most loved portrait award. The exhibit showcases 100 works from throughout the prize’s history.

“We are delighted to be the exclusive NSW destination for the Archie 100 tour and invite visitors to come and see the show and to explore all that our region has to offer,” Bathurst Mayor, Councillor Robert Taylor says.

Established by JF Archibald in 1921, the Archibald Prize aims to foster portraiture, support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians. The open competition has been held annually, where the best portrait “of some man or woman distinguished in arts, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia” is awarded the prize.

The exhibition is arranged thematically and explores the history of the Archibald Prize – from good times to controversial – these works combined reflect how Australian society has changed throughout history.

Portraits of both renowned and forgotten Australasian artists throughout the last century have been contributed from public and private collections.
