The French Film Festival returns this year for its 36th presentation, with a program consisting of 42 of the finest cinematic offerings which have garnered a total of 54 nominations at the Cesar Awards (French Academy Awards).

Denis Morandet is the General Manager of Alliance Francaise de Sydney and his association with this festival is to oversee the team running this local edition.

French cinema has performed well over the past year in its homeland having exceeded expectations at the box office accumulating over 22 million attendees.

“French cinema is truly thriving and more creative than ever, showcasing a vibrant and dynamic industry. French filmmakers have always pushed the boundaries of storytelling, blending emotions, aesthetics, and culture in unique ways,” enthused Morandet.

He explained that the depth of character development, the ability to tackle complex themes, and the attention to visual detail all contribute to its global appeal.

“Moreover, French cinema offers a diverse range of genres, from classic masterpieces to innovative contemporary films, which resonate with audiences on a deeply personal level.”

The lavish opening night biographical drama Monsieur Aznavour surrounds the life and career of iconic singer/songwriter Charles Aznavour, from his early years living in poverty to his later years where he finds success realizing his own ambitions.

French filmmakers produce good comedies and this year there’s a fantastic selection to choose from.

Morandet said that for pure comedies, Riviera Revenge, Meet the Leroys, All Stirred Up, and The Scammers are all incredibly funny.

“If you’re looking for a mix of comedy and drama, I personally adored My Brother’s Band and Holy Cow. But as a fan of dark humour, I cannot recommend How to Make a Killing and Lucky Winners enough – they had me in stitches! And, of course, the Closing Night film, In the Sub for Love, will definitely delight fans of both comedy and romance!”

There have reportedly been 9 films, and 2 miniseries produced on The Count Of Monte Cristo over the years and yet the latest French version of this timeless classic has stormed the box office in France with over 10 million admissions. When asked why this is so Morandet was quick to respond.

“Over the years, Alexandre Dumas’ masterpiece has captivated audiences with its universal themes of revenge, justice, betrayal, and redemption, which continue to resonate across generations. This fresh and modern adaptation has likely appealed to a new generation of viewers, while still retaining the core elements of the classic story that fans like me know and love.”

When asked which three movies screening at this festival are must-sees he laughingly responded, “Oh you’re making this impossible! It’s so difficult to choose just three from such an incredible selection!”

He then proceeded to recommend Monsieur Aznavour, The Count Of Monte Cristo and Beating Hearts.

“But I would also add Army of Shadows, the 1969 classic masterpiece by Jean-Pierre Melville, for the profound impact it had on me as a young viewer and the joy I receive from seeing it again on the big screen!”

This is the biggest French Film Festival outside France and surprisingly 76% of attendees are Australian. When asked why non-French speaking moviegoers who have never attended this festival should come along and watch a movie or two, he paused momentarily.

“When you attend the Alliance Française French Film Festival, you are not just watching films – you are engaging in a truly immersive cultural experience. The films offer a window into the heart of France, allowing you to discover its history, culture, humour, and passions, all while capturing its very essence.”

And what recommendation does Morandet send out to people who would like to attend a screening but don’t enjoy reading sub-titles?

“They’re always welcome to visit their nearest Alliance Française to start learning French or refresh their high school memories!”
