A HUNGER SUITE

A HUNGER SUITE

Franz Kafka’s 1924 short story A Hunger Artist is literally about starving for art – one man’s world famous public performances of extended fasting.

“We’re exploring how this absurdist, existential story is still meaningful and relevant today,” says Emily Ayoub of A Hunger Suite, which is inspired by the story.

Unfortunately for Kafka’s ambitious, emaciated and caged hunger artist, the public were disinterested in his work, making him all the more needy for recognition.

The small ensemble cast, featuring Emily Ayoub, Turkish artist Mine Cerci and Alicia Gonzales, portray the team of three watchers of the hunger artist in Kafka’s timely fable.

“The challenge for this work is to capture and convey the textures and sounds of a hungry and emaciated body for the audience,” continues Emily Ayoub. This Clockfire Theatre production brings to life the sounds of hunger and the emptiness of the body using music and live sound produced by stage props.
