THE BUSINESS

THE BUSINESS

Brash, self-interested and shallow, the characters in The Business, highlight the decadence of the super rich. Set in the 80s, this production is an adaptation of Maxim Gorky’s play Vassa Zheleznova, which criticises the petit-bourgeoisie and their indulgent way of life before the revolution.

Gorky’s contemptible characters are reinvented in the decadent 80s. Van (Sarah Pierse) tries to gain control of the family business from her spoilt children as their father slips in and out of consciousness. The father spends his dying days carving up his life’s work in a lavish over-the-top palazzo. They take drugs, eat, and gleefully await their inheritance.

The Business, is an entertaining spectacle about the darker side of humanity. It’s Gorky plonked into Ramsey Street.

The actors deliver strong performances in this soap opera style adaptation. Those who enjoy accessible theatre will appreciate the deeper message. Others who prefer their masters to be left untouched, might find it shallow.
