Wyrmwood – Road of the Dead

Wyrmwood – Road of the Dead

Review by Michael Muir

The lead is called ‘Barry’ and accents, bushland and beer prove this to be an Australian road movie about flesh-eating zombies.

Director Kiah Roache -Turner knows how to create tension and is surely destined for greater things. The bizarrely inventive script comes from Kiah and his brother Tristan.

The actors make the most of this material and casting directors should keep in mind Jay Gallagher (Barry), Bianca Bradey (intense), Leon Burchill (the archetypal mate), Keith Agius, Yure Covich, Catherine Terracini, Berynn Schwerdt (a campy, deranged doctor).

Filmed mostly on weekends over 3.5 years, you have to admire the persistence of everyone involved (many ‘zombies’ worked for free).

Apparently genre festivals around the world (Texas, South Korea and Canada) have already received it warmly. Could it become a cult classic?

Anything but boring; a few less laughs than there could have been; a zombie movie – an Australian one. (MMu)
