A 27-year-old woman has been Tasered and arrested after allegedly stabbing a man outside Dendy Cinema in Newtown, with the police response closing part of King Street today.

Emergency services were called to the cinema in Sydney’s Inner West about 11.40am following reports of an assault. Police said a 48-year-old man had allegedly been stabbed in the hand by a woman unknown to him.

The man received treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition. Police established a crime scene as officers searched the surrounding area.

Officers subsequently located a 27-year-old woman who was allegedly still carrying a knife. Police say they directed her to drop the weapon, then used a Taser when she allegedly failed to comply.

She was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station, where inquiries continued. The alleged stabbing and the circumstances surrounding her arrest remain under investigation.

Local bookstore manager Rachel Goldrich told news.com.au she became aware of the incident when women came into the shop seeking shelter.

Goldrich said she heard shouting and stepped outside, where she saw a woman carrying a knife and moving between traffic as drivers veered away. Police cars then arrived with their sirens sounding.

“They pulled up, jumped out, told her to put the knife down, and when she didn’t they tased her twice.”

No charges had been laid at the time of the news.com.au report.

King Street closures and bus diversions

The police operation disrupted traffic along Newtown’s main street, with King Street closed in both directions and the section between Church Street and Wilson Street closed to the public.

According to Live Traffic NSW information, northbound vehicles were being diverted via Wilson Street, while southbound traffic was redirected via Missenden Road. Buses were also diverting away from the area.

NSW Police said the woman remained the subject of further inquiries at the local station.

“The woman has been taken to Newtown Police Station where inquiries are ongoing,” police said in a statement reported by 7NEWS.

Investigations into the alleged stabbing are continuing.
