WILLIE NELSON & ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL – WILLIE & THE WHEEL

WILLIE NELSON & ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL – WILLIE & THE WHEEL

Good old Willie Nelson – he’s certainly maintained a healthy balance of musical activity in recent years, still kicking along at 76 making records with people like Calexico and Ryan Adams, while campaigning for alternative fuels and marijuana legalisation. He’s the quintessential American dust-bowl hippy, and his instantly recognizable voice, that distinct reedy drawl, remains as joyous and slyly confident as ever on this latest project. Coupled with his long-time friends, the legendary bluegrass-dixie ensemble Asleep At The Wheel, Willie and this talented consort rip through a set of traditionally-styled C&W swing numbers, and the effect is mesmerising. The infectiously rollicking Hesitation Blues and homely knee-slapper Jennie Lee open up the bill, the latter punctuated by fantastically cheese-ball barbershop harmonies from the ‘Wheel’s ageing baritone ensemble. The roof is rattling on its rafters for the entire set, particular hair-raisers are the cutely randy Bring it on Down to my House and the classic Corrine Corrina. Aided by juicy analogue production and positively brimming with colour and warmth, this thing is irresistible and coyly avoids outstaying its welcome at just under 40 minutes in length. No matter how high you may raise your pitchfork against country and western music, this should remain immune for all time.
