WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN

The possibility of giving birth to somebody we dislike is unthinkable.  So much so that, perhaps most of us have never given it any thought. This unbearable possibility, along with Tilda Swinton’s stoic responses as the unthinkable happens to her, are part of what makes We Need to Talk About Kevin at once a compelling and challenging watch. Adapted from Lionel Shriver’s novel, the film follows the birth and growth of Kevin through the eyes of his mother, played by Tilda Swinton, as they embark on a life of mutual contempt, with Kevin slowly embodying the cold murderer he is to become. A stunning performance by Ezra Miller as Kevin and Swinton, as well as some beautiful cinematography lend the dark fabric of this film an enigmatic, multilayered quality.  Following the originality of Ratcatcher and the murkiness of Morvern Callar, it is no surprise that Lynne Ramsay’s third film should be a staggering achievement.
