Waves of literary talent

An anthology by a dozen writers from the eastern suburbs will be launched this month with a splash.

Members of the Bondi Writers Group are releasing Bondi Tides, a compilation of short stories, poems, memoirs and excerpts from novels, on March 17 following the successful launch of its e-book last year.

The anthology’s editor and contributor, Carol Chandler said the Group’s breadth of talent drove her to publish the works.

“I was inspired to do the anthology because I was so impressed with the quality of the writing and the commitment of the people in the group.”

Contributor and local writer Gavin Hanbridge said the launch is an opportunity for the community to read what local writers produce.

He credits the Bondi Writers Group’s Sunday meetings for overcoming creativity hurdles, building his confidence and enabling him to network with other aspiring authors.

“It’s been a wonderful opportunity to get together with others and listen to what’s happening. It’s certainly helped me develop my own skills.”

His story Sink Hole is a narrative set in Japan amidst the devastation of pollution.
Although the book’s writers live in the Eastern Suburbs, their stories are set in far-flung destinations such as the Southern Highlands, Communist Hungary and Japan.

The anthology features established and award-winning scribes Cynthia Rowe and Bill Widerberg and emerging artists like Gita Irwin.

Organisers are hoping the event will inspire more collaboration between both professional and amateur writers at the Group’s monthly meetings which serves as a platform of support for artists.

The launch at Waverley Library is from1-3pm and will be attended by Mayor John Wakefield. A Waverley Council grant aided in the printing of Bondi Tides.
