Broadway is preparing to welcome Christmas with the tenth annual “Carols in Vic Park” celebration.

Organisers expect 1200 people to sing together by candlelight at Victoria Park this Saturday.

Organisers St Barnabas Anglican Church, Broadway said they were pleased the event has become a staple for the local community.

“What I love about Carols is that it brings the local community together, creating an opportunity for strangers to become friends,” said the event organiser, Reverend Diana Morgan.

“In a small way, that is the Christmas story in practice.”

Every year at the event collection is taken for a charity organisation.

Over the years, the local community has donated $4600 for Bridge of Hope to fund microfinance loans in Indonesia, $2800 for Habitat for Humanity to build affordable homes around the world, and $1900 for Save the Children to fund development projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

The event also boasts face painting and balloon animal activities provided for children as well as a finale fireworks display.

“We couldn’t run this wonderful community event without our generous supporters and are delighted that our major sponsor, the City of Sydney, and also Broadway Shopping Centre are sponsoring the 2010 Carols,” said the Reverend Mike Paget, senior minister of St Barnabas.
