Two men have been arrested after the assault of two off-duty police officers in Newtown on Wednesday night.

NSW Police allege that the officers, both 25, were walking along Enmore Road just after 11pm after a concert nearby, and approached three unknown men in their 20s, arguing.

They were then assaulted, one of the men being knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked in the head.

When police were called to the scene, they found a “25-year-old man unconscious on the roadway.”

An off-duty nurse performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took him to Royal Prince Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The second man suffered facial injuries and was also taken to hospital, but had since discharged.

Supt Despa Fitzgerald said that man knocked unconscious sustained “serious head injuries”.

“The officer was unconscious for some time, without their assistance we may be talking about something more serious … anything could have happened,” she said.

“I met with the family of the officer … at hospital this morning, they were obviously distressed to have to come to a hospital to give support to their son … thinking [he] was going out for a night out and this ended up occurring.”

Police appeal to public for assistance

The three attackers reportedly fled from the scene before police arrived, with two allegedly running towards the Enmore Road precinct and the other heading towards King Street.

Police arrested two men aged 18 and 20 at a home in Mascot on Thursday afternoon.

The 20-year-old man was charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others.

The 18-year-old man was charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others and larceny.

Both were denied bail and are appearing before Downing Centre Local Court on Friday.

Police are still inquiring into the whereabouts of the third man.

Police minister, Yasmin Catley, urged anyone with information to come forward.

“It’s a very busy area where this offence occurred,” she said. “It’s very early in this investigation … [but police] know that there will be dashcam footage, CCTV footage, indeed people with their cameras videoing.”
