TUKA

TUKA

Tuka is a very busy man. Just as he returned from playing a sold out Melbourne show with his crew Thundamentals, where a hundred punters queued and missed out on seeing the popular Sydney hip-hop collective, Tuka now turns his attention towards the recent release of his second solo effort Feedback Loop; a burning beat-driven venture through Tuka’s internal psyche.

“This album’s a boundary testing thing; to know what you’re capable of. The title’s all about a cycle where an idea goes through a circle of people or a society and distorts or changes meaning; like a sound frequency distorting as it feedbacks through a sound system. My songs filter out into society and when I get people’s feedback I’ll learn as a musician.”

On taking the time to explore musical possibilities away from Thundamentals, Tuka says, “My solo stuff’s a lot more personal obviously and it’s hard to share that with another songwriter.” Although he admits that while he had ideas for how he wanted the songs to sound he still enlisted the help of friends that could help him realise that vision such as production duo Sleepers Awake and the Herd’s Jane Tyrell, who features on second single Die a Happy Man.

Despite his busy schedule Tuka has had thoughts on making the Feedback Loop album launch an exciting and absorbing show, though he holds his cards close to his chest on what that will entail except to ensure us cheekily, “I’ve almost memorised all the songs!”
