Impersonating your dead sister, suspecting an ex of faking cancer, and a widower’s persistent dog are some of the plot points you’ll find in the 15 short films selected as Tropfest finalists for this year’s competition, with room for one more publicly voted film in a surprise festival first.

The world’s largest short film festival is returning with a bang after a six year absence, even managing to snap up Margot Robbie as the jury president.

Tropfest announced their 15 finalists this morning, submitted from emerging and established filmmakers alike, and with genres spanning across animation, comedy, drama, documentary, thriller and action.

In a Tropfest first, one more finalist will be decided as part of the inaugural YouTube Tropfest Wildcard Competition, giving audiences around the world the opportunity to vote for one of the 10 Wildcard contenders, with the winner securing the coveted final spot at the festival.

The 10 Wildcard films are now live on Tropfest’s official YouTube channel, with viewers asked to like, comment, and share before February 14 to help their pick make it to the big screen when Tropfest returns to Centennial Park on Sunday, 22 February 2026.

Revival boasts massively impressive shortlist

Selected from more than 700 entries, the films were whittled down to 318 pre-selected titles, around three times more than previous Tropfest shortlists – before being narrowed further to these 25 films.

“Narrowing the field to just 15 finalists and 10 Wildcard contenders  was one of the toughest jobs we’ve had in the festival’s history,” said Tropfest Founder and Director John Polson.

“The standard of entries this year was truly exceptional. These filmmakers represent an exciting glimpse into where short filmmaking is at right now in Australia and around the world.  The Wildcard Comp is a great way to let audiences have their say.”

Filmmakers are competing for a share of a record-breaking $100,000 through the newly established CommBank Tropfest Emerging Filmmakers Fund. First, second and third prizes are valued at $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000 respectively, with CommBank encouraging winners to invest their prize money back into the development of their own careers.

The 2026 event also marks Tropfest’s official transition to a not-for-profit Foundation, dedicated to nurturing emerging creative talent. The Foundation is guided by a board of cultural leaders including Bryan Brown, John Polson, Peter V’landys, Richard Weinberg, and Sarah Murdoch as Chair.

Before the festival’s opening night, the revived Tropfest will run two days worth of workshops for up-and-coming filmmakers, with the main event livestreamed worldwide through YouTube.
