At around 10AM this morning, Transport NSW announced via its official Instagram page that Central Station is in the process of being renamed “City Hub”, with teams already “hard at work” switching over the original signage. This rebrand is no doubt a move to commemorate its namesake, Sydney’s finest urban news and lifestyle publication.

The Port Authority of NSW was quick to celebrate this rebrand with three clapping emojis. Other comments included a reply from Sydney Opera House, requesting via this most official channel that Circular Quay be renamed the “Best Stop for the Sydney Opera House”.

While the post sparked much outrage, one commenter claiming they “almost had a panic attack”, International Drag Queen superstar Courtney Act was quick to clarify the situation. “I’m so glad it’s April 1,” she wrote in the comments.

Subsequent analysis by City Hub’s team of experts has revealed that Transport NSW’s post was indeed likely an April Fools’ prank, though it remains City Hub’s official position that our name would be an apt fit for Sydney’s heritage-listed railway station.

“What a beautiful way to thank City Hub for keeping our urbanites entertained and informed,” one City Hub spokesperson said. “In a way, much like Central Station, we really are the connective tissue that keeps our city moving and thriving.” It is City Hub’s hope that Transport NSW comes to their senses and moves forward with the rebrand.

While most commenters met the Instagram post with the same good-faith humour NSW Transport intended, others saw it as an opportunity to satirise the rising costs of transport being slept on by policymakers. “It would be such a funny prank to make public transport free or at least affordable during a global fuel shortage,” user @karlskiddmarx wrote. “Haha guys that would be soooo funny imagine people already financially struggling being able to afford to go to work.”

This comes just days after the NSW transport minister ruled out free public transport, arguing it would cost the state “millions of dollars every single day”.
