THEATRE: WHO’S THAT CHIK?

THEATRE: WHO’S THAT CHIK?

With Who’s That Chik? BIG is the word. It’s the tale of a brown girl, Candy B of rapping duo Sista She, who has big dreams, big thighs, big emotions, big love, big sneakers, big style, big booty, big hair and a mighty big smile. All this in a rather small space. So, what is hip hop theatre? Apparently, it’s got a healthy serve of everything – rap, spoken word, street dance, beats production and video. “It’s the tale of highs and lows, blocks and flows of growing up brown with an afro and big dreams in Australia,” says Candy. From her childhood forays as Brown Dwarf (in Snow White), Brown Duck (in Mother Goose) to showing the whities what’s what in NIDA and the male-dominated hip hop circles, this is one sista who could and would. Brown is the new black, baby. And in this performance, it looks set to be larger than life.
