THE WATER MAGICIAN

THE WATER MAGICIAN

It’s a thematic trio that is as enduring today as 1890: troubled women, star-crossed love, and intense scenes of heartbreak. Set during the Meiji ear, The Water Magician (1933) by acclaimed Japanese director Kenji Mizoguchi is one of only six surviving silent films from his oeuvre of 57. It follows a travelling circus troupe, a faithful woman juggler and the coach driver she loves. As you can guess, it all ends in tears. With Kurosawa, Welles and Godard counting among Mizoguchi’s admirers, this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to catch not only a cinematic gem, but witness a now rarely-seen form of traditional Japanese silent film narration known as benshi, here voiced by Kataoka Ichiro. Finally – a running commentary you’ll welcome. (AB)
