MOVIE: THE INVENTION OF LYING

THE INVENTION OF LYING is set in a world where no one has ever been dishonest. Sound dreamy? Not if you’re Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais), an unsuccessful and unattractive writer regularly on the receiving end of others’ brutal honesty. The film opens on a rather unlikely date with the beautiful Anna (Jennifer Garner), who leaves him in no doubt of his chances for further romantic involvement. Gervais, the comedian responsible for both The Office and Extras, has always been concerned with issues of honesty and tact. Working with a big budget, and collaborating for the first time with writer/director Matthew Robinson, he’s takes this concern to its logical conclusion. Unfortunately The Invention of Lying falls very flat and the absence of regular creative partner Stephen Merchant is badly felt. Short on laughs and at times incoherent, it’s Gervais’ least honest and inventive effort yet. (ABo)
