The Hungry Mile now set in stone

East Darling Harbour’s industrial wharves will soon be lost to urban renewal but history will live on forever in the area now officially called The Hungry Mile.
The area of Hickson Road between the Munn Street overbridge and Napolean Street was renamed at a ceremony last Wednesday with Premier Nathan Rees and Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore in attendance.
The name will serve as a permanent reminder of the working class heritage of the area soon to be transformed into the Barangaroo waterfront apartment precinct.

‘The Hungry Mile’ pays tribute to those who trod the stretch during the Great Depression, famished and desperate for work. Many heroes of the historic stretch will be honoured along the sandstone cliff face that backs Hickson Road. The change was announced in 2006 following a campaign by the Maritime Union of Australia, but has only just been officially realised.
