TEDx Sydney shows off Australian ideas

Sydneysiders descended on Redfern last Sunday for the highly-anticipated annual TEDx conference.

The event, hosted in Carriage Works theatre, featured lectures and performances by specialists such as Bird behaviourist Josh Cook, the Chaser’s Craig Reucassel and musician Paul Kelly.

One of the organisers, Remo Giuffré, praised the capacity of not for profit organisation, TED to spread ideas and said he hoped the event would inspire Australian creativity.

“It’s not just about putting on another event; it’s about moving things forward and making a contribution to the future.”

“Today you’re part of a truly remarkable show,” he said in his address to the audience.

The future was a flowing theme through the Sunday’s events.

Speaker, Inventor Saul Griffith called for an ‘awesome future’ of sustainability and child-like creativity while astronomer Bryan Gaensler looked forward the Australia’s groundbreaking future in observing cosmic mysteries.

Local Pyrmont resident, Tim Ansell, who watched the performances on the public big-screen in the foyer said Mr Griffith’s speech about how we can have an “awesome future” gave him hope about his own future.

“We should have an aspiring view, why would we want to have a depressing view of the future.”

Maria Orr, who drove up from Wollongong for event said the TEDx conference inspired her.

“I loved the atmosphere. It was great to be involved with ideas that should be shared.”

Other attendees said that although they loved the event and how it was free and accessible, they thought it was poorly marketed and not many people knew about it.

TEDx Sydney has been running since 2001 and this year was its biggest event yet. Next year’s event will be themed ‘full spectrum’.
