Following the release of her pop-rock single, “slut era” in July of this year and grungy ballad “DYNAMITE” in 2023, the second studio album Stop and Smell the Lighting from indie-pop songstress Annie Hamilton is out now.

The release of Stop and Smell the Lighting should definitely be elevating the Sydney-based fashion designer and musician past ‘rising star’ status.

She’s now begun her Australia/UK tour that culminates in a performance at Sydney’s Lansdowne Hotel on December 13.

Love and empowerment in grungy pop vibes

Hamilton’s light and airy voice gives the album a breathless and dreamlike sound that is amplified by the soft yet echoing electronic chords, ethereal vocal effects, and synth drums that sound like a dream that you never want to wake up from.

The album ranges from soothing acoustic ballads like “stay my mind (arrival),” and “from the hotel pool i draw a line,” to grungy pop dance numbers like “DYNAMITE” and “talk.”

The album follows themes like young love, heartbreak, empowerment, reminiscence, and finding oneself, peppered with witty yet profound lyricism.

The standouts of the album are the tracks “slut era,” a tune which oozes femme fatale empowerment, where the lyrics are a biting commentary of modern-day hookup culture; “on your mind”, which sounds like stepping into a fantasy world where nothing else matters; and “talk,” which radiates a young Courtney Love energy, accompanied by scratchy guitars and a punchy bassline.

Tickets and merchandise can be purchased on her website.
